Before flying into San Francisco I have done a little bit of research on what kind of interesting food the city has to offer! One of them is definitely the infamous Russian Honey Cake from 20th Century Cafe (@20thcenturycafesf)!
Service
Locating at the corner of Gough and Oak Street near the Van Ness BART station, the vibe in the cafe was very relaxing and cozy – the music felt like they were from a vinyl record; it was playing some sort of classic old songs. (possibly 60s or older?)
As I walked in, it wasn’t a super busy day (it was a weekday) so I just walked right to the counter and looked at the menu and all the baked goods and cakes they have at the front. The staff were all very friendly and all dressed like they are from an old era, which felt very retro & unique 🙂
Taste
Here are some items I ordered:
Bacon cheese pogacsa: soft inside with little bit of saltiness on the outside. Bits and pieces of cheese and bacon all over, and it tastes good and not heavy at all!
Russian honey cake: quite a unique flavor, something I’ve never tried before 🙂 it has a honey and brown sugar taste and cream in between the cake layers. Personally for the last few bites the cream might feel a little bit too much to finish. The cake itself is very soft and very delicious and not dry.
