Review: Cafe Loki

Before my trip to Reykjavik, Iceland in March, I asked my colleague who just went to the same place 2 weeks ago for recommendations. One of the places he went was Cafe Loki and he said great things about the place! So I decided to put it as one of my bucket list items in Reykjavik. Luckily I was staying in Hotel Odinsve I booked from Hotels.com, which is only two blocks away from Cafe Loki, so I decided to drop by in the morning to get an authentic Icelandic breakfast there!

Cute sign of Cafe Loki

The location of Cafe Loki was really easy to find, with clear signage hanging outside and it is at the corner of the street. The cafe gave me a very chilled and cozy vibe – I was given an English menu with photos (which are always helpful!) by the staff, and out of all the options, I picked the “Baldur Icelandic Plate” to give it a try!

This plate includes two rye bread slices, one with mashed fish & the other with egg & herring, plus Loki’s unique RYE BREAD ice cream (One of the main reasons I picked it)! Keep reading to find out more about the taste!

Service

Service-wise, I found it welcoming and friendly with the staff and no complaints! There was only 1 person in the cafe. I was one of the first customers for the day since it was quite early, and eventually more tourists came and started filling the tables. Food was served in a timely manner and the staff seemed to be enjoying himself with the music playing in the cafe.

Taste & Price

This Icelandic plate costs 2400 Kr (Icelandic Krona), which is about $23 Canadian dollars. It’s not a secret that food in Iceland is expensive, so I was not too surprised about the price. I think it was worth it to try something that you don’t usually eat back home, so please be prepared if you plan to visit!

Herring with cold boiled egg on rye bread slice & Mashed fish with rye bread slice

It was always great to taste something local and authentic when visiting a foreign country :). On one rye bread slice on the plate, the herring was nicely lay on some half-sliced cold boiled eggs, and on top of the herring were some pickled onions. It was my first time tasting this combination, and I think the onions tasted great to balance out herring’s mild salty fish flavour. The herring on the bread was definitely unique to my taste buds.

Rye Bread Ice Cream

For the rye bread ice cream, it had a very creamy texture that was very enjoyable. In addition, it almost felt like cookies and cream with the little bits of bread pieces being incorporated inside the ice cream. You can feel the graininess of the bread bites but also the smoothness of the ice cream. The ice cream itself tastes similar to vanilla but not as sweet, so the syrup and whipped cream on top was great to give that a little extra sweetness. Definitely something I would go back for (if Iceland isn’t that far)!

There you have it! My little Icelandic dessert experience I share with you!
